METHOD STATEMENT

A Method Statement is a written document that essentially describes safety methods of work and identifies the main hazards that may occur during the work. A Method Statement is usually produced for each particular working activity within the project. They are presented to the workforce so that everybody involved fully understands the necessary safe working methods and safety procedures. Method Statements have no general or standard format, as every company, project and job are different. However, each one should include the following sections:

  • Basic contract or job information
  • Scope of works
  • List of hazards identified
  • Safe method of work
  • List of plant or equipment
  • Operatives’ competence

Additionally, Method Statements may include:

  • Sketches or drawings
  • Risk or COSHH assessments
  • Monitoring and review

A Method Statement may also contain information regarding specific requirements as requested by the client, principal contractor, manufacturers, local authority or Health and Safety specialists.
